Notes and Editorial Reviews

It is good to have new performances of this caliber in the catalog at such a reasonable price. Nestled between the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains, Georgia has been the home of a people of great energy and indomitable spirit for centuries. Music, including a rich choral tradition, has been central to its culture. From this rich heritage, Vakhtang Jordania has emerged as a conductor equally gifted in symphonic and operatic performance. Beginning with piano studies at the age of five, he went on to study at the Tbilisi Conservatory. He studied conducting at the Leningrad Conservatory where he graduated with honors, and then attended the Moscow Conservatory. In 1971, he received a top prize in the Herbert von Karajan competition. He was Read more soon appointed as an assistant to Yevgeny Mravinsky. Before he defected to the West, he was conductor of the Leningrad Radio Orchestra, Saratov Philharmonic and Kharkov Philharmonic. He began his association with the Russian Federal Orchestra in the summer of 1993 with his appointment as their Chief Conductor and Artistic Director. Read less
