Notes and Editorial Reviews

This great recital by Thomas Bacon captures the idiomatic urban qualities permeating composer Alec Wilder's serious music. Though there are some similarities, Wilder's chamber pieces are not faux populist like Aaron Copland's perhaps more precisely scored compositions. They didn't have to be since Wilder was a genuinely successful popular songwriter with several hits to his credit, most notably "I'll Be Around." In actual practice however, there isn't all that much difference between this composer's harmonically allusive songs and his prolific classical chamber output. Both are characterized by Wilder's restless and rambling melodies, like an insomniac's perambulations along Times Square streets at 3:00 A.M.
