Notes and Editorial Reviews

[T]he Pierne Concertstuck is hardly familiar over here at all. More robust, more symphonic than the Debussy or the Ravel, it appeared only a few years earlier... Pierne's piece should obviously take a high place in it. It could surely hardly have a more persuasive performance than it does here... Not to respond to the disc is not to like the harp: possible, no doubt, but made by Miss Challan to seem most highly unreasonable.

-- Gramophone [10/1965, reviewing the Pierne on LP]

Elias Parish-Alvars...became the greatest harpist of his day. He worked mostly on the continent, and Berlioz, who met him in Dresden in 1843, described him as "the
Read more Liszt of the harp. It is inconceivable what graceful and spirited effects he can produce on such a limited instrument"... Parish-Alvars mostly composed flashy fantasias on opera tunes but late in life he managed a couple of concertos of which the G minor is presumably the better... [T]he words "neglected masterpiece" come to mind... Nicanor Zabaleta is said to have revised the Concerto—the solo part certainly and for all I know the orchestral music as well... The playing is superb; even in the vacuous slow movement one can admire the soloist's marvellously expressive playing of delicate nothings... Zabaleta's performance is exquisite.

-- Gramophone [10/1974, reviewing the Alvars on LP]

...At the other end of the disc comes the glitter and shimmer of Ravel's Introduction and Allegro. At its heart this is a showpiece for harp and Markus Klinko and his six supporting artists from the Orchestre de l'Opéra de Paris Bastille do not disappoint.
