Notes and Editorial Reviews

This set includes an interview with Pierre Bernac by Graham Johnson.
Pierre Bernac wrote the book on French song. Literally! It's called 'The Interpretation of French Song,' and this set from Testament makes it easy to understand why, even decades after its publication, the book is such an essential reference for singers. Testament delved into the archives at EMI and the BBC to produce this collection of mostly French repertoire, mostly with Francis Poulenc at the piano, and it is certainly not a stretch to call it THE ESSENTIAL PIERRE BERNAC.
In addition to French song cycles by the likes of Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Poulenc, this set includes as the bulk of its detour into German song a previously unreleased 'Dichterliebe'
Read more from 1950. Although Bernac's German has a bit of a French accent, his interpretation is no less apt in Schumann than in Ravel.
Beyond being a document of Bernac's art, this set is invaluable as a demonstration of a perfect singer-pianist partnership. Poulenc and Bernac first performed together in 1926 and in 1935 began twenty-five years of concertizing. Well over half of Poulenc's songs were written for Bernac, and a good number of them are included here. Read less
