Notes and Editorial Reviews

Daniel Barenboim's career in music has been marked by innovation. An active performer and conductor, he gave his first public concert in 1950. This album, which celebrates 50 years of performance, highlights his work as a conductor of 20th century music.
From the opening drumbeats of 'African Portraits,' listeners are aware this is a different kind of money. Blending traditional orchestra with tribal drums and Mendi vocals, the vibrant music breathes an exciting new energy into the album, setting a tone of innovation.
Compositions by Elliott Carter and Toru Takemitsu strike similar chords with very different methods. Carter's 'Partitia' soars through a modern soundscape, punctuated by outbursts from different parts of the orchestra.
Read more Takemitsu's "Visions" takes a more serene approach. A dreamy melody pervades the music, which was written in celebration of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's 100th anniversary.
Barenboim leads the Chicago Symphony in remarkably engaging performances of new music. With half a century already under his belt, his career continues to look toward the future. Read less
