Notes and Editorial Reviews

A CD that entertains hugely as it captures the romance of a great journey, from the Italy of Rota to the Orient of Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade.

Don't be misled by the title "Orient Express" into expecting to find Richard Rodney Bennett's music for the Agatha Christie film here. Rather the collection aims to capture, through suitable musical items, "the romance of a great journey". It certainly entertains hugely as it progresses along a somewhat roundabout route from the Italy of Rota, Leoncavallo and Rossini, through the Paris of Massenet and Debussy, the Vienna of Schrammel, Stolz, Kreisler and Brandt (his song Der alte Stephansdom, arranged by Kreisler as The Old Refrain), and the Hungary of
Read more Horvath and Muhr, to the Orient of Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade and Enescu's famous Romanian Rhapsody.

"Who does not know the incredibly sad melody from La strada?" asks the note writer. Well, this reviewer for a start. But I must say that the medley of distinctive Rota themes for four Fellini films (the others being Boccaccio, Amarcord and 81) makes a highly attractive opener. I also welcome, alongside the more familiar items, Horvath's Cradle song from the film The way of all flesh. I Salonisti are no coffee-shop quartet, of course, but serious musicians who play these arrangements with tremendous refinement, affection, enjoyment and total absence of gimmicks. Decca's recording is ideal, giving the feeling of sitting a few tables away from the players. I certainly enjoyed the journey.
