Notes and Editorial Reviews

Just for fun, play Bizet's Symphony in C right after Prokofiev's Classical Symphony. Doesn't it sound like Prokofiev must have known his Bizet? Then consider that the Frenchman's piece (composed some 60 years earlier) was actually discovered and premiered about a decade after the composition of the Prokofiev! Amazing. Bizet's student work has enough charm and freshness for ten "classical" symphonies, and Beecham's legendary performance is as stylish and ebullient as one could wish. The same holds true for the two suites from L'Arlésienne. Beecham was one of those great conductors who lavished the same care and attention on "little pieces" as on the great masterworks, and his devotion certainly shows in every Read more loving detail. As remastered, the sound has come up better than ever, though it's still a bit cavernous in the symphony--the French style at the time (and frequently since, unfortunately). Truly, though, this is one of the great recordings of the (20th) century.
