Compared with Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms, Mendelssohn has not enjoyed a high reputation as a composer of songs. It is generally assumed that this is due to his suspicion of Romantic subjectivity, one of the strong features of his peers. He also composed a lot of them with amateur performers in mind; those were the days when people had to entertain themselves a lot more than they do now. To be sure, some of his Lieder, including their piano accompaniments, would be a challenge to any but the most talented amateur.

In 1997, the 150th anniversary of the composer’s death, Eugene Asti proposed recording all (or as much as could be found) of Mendelssohn’s approximately 135 songs and duets and Hyperion took him up on it. This is Volume 4. Some of the songs were juvenilia; some were given to friends as gifts; many had disappeared into private collections. Most of the songs on this CD have been recorded for the first time. One, left unfinished, was completed by Asti in Mendelssonian style. Most of the songs are strophic, some folk-like and straightforward. No one ever said (I assume) that Mendelssohn couldn’t write a good tune but, for the most part, it is fair to say that the surface is the music. There are other great composers of whom this could be said, and these tuneful, elegant, and fairly obscure miniatures make a pleasant change of pace from more “profound” efforts. In any event, Mendelssohn’s standing in music history does not depend upon his songs. The performances themselves evoke an intimate gathering of friends in a 19th-century parlor; somehow, the pleasant voices’ lack of vocal glamour seems appropriate. As in earlier volumes of this series, the cover art is by none other than Mendelssohn himself—composing obviously wasn’t his only talent.
