In August 1970 Boult and the LSO got through a schedule of Elgar and Vaughan Williams recordings so quickly that enough sessions were left for two unplanned works—Brahms's Third Symphony and the Tragic Overture. This was a turning point in Boult's late EMI phase, for now he was to break away from purely British repertoire and record not only a complete Brahms symphony cycle but works by Wagner and several other non-British composers.

Boult's conducting of the Third Symphony's first two movements has the spirit and spontaneity of an unplanned venture, which when married to his depth of experience and understanding and his sense of architecture shows him at his very best. The last two movements somehow have lost a little of
Read more that earlier zest, but are still brought off well enough to make up a very good account of the work as a whole. The Academic Festival Overture then shows a loss of temperature... There is still of course a richness of experience and mastery of form and structure, but Sir Adrian, courteous and thoughtful English gentleman, was for some reason not always willing to thrust Brahms's arguments fully home, and there is a little too much reserve in his music-making.
