Notes and Editorial Reviews

Volume 8 of this comprehensive Bach cycle finds Kevin Bowyer in exceptionally boisterous mood. There is a decidedly cheeky account of the Fugue on a theme by Legrenzi, the chorale prelude on Wachet auf (BWV645) has an undeniably mischievous character, while of the Preludes and Fugues the youthful C major (BWV531) seems about to burst with unrestrained joie de vivre. Even the great B minor (BWV544) dances along in so sprightly a manner that it’s hard to reconcile this performance with Bowyer’s own description of the work’s “tragic character”. I like the enthusiasm and boundless energy of this playing; whether I could live with such unrelenting ebullience is another matter. Bowyer’s tireless enthusiasm certainly brings to life gloriously some Read more of the less familiar music. Listen to the sheer wit of Herzlich lieb hab ich dich from the Neumeister chorales, the bubbling transcription (normally the preserve of harpsichordists) of Vivaldi’s F major Violin Concerto, and the vivacious Trio Sonata – not the Trio Sonata in G (as observant readers will have noticed) but one comprising organ transcriptions of a number of single trio movements for various combinations of instruments.

All this continues the trend in this series of setting familiar works beside those of dubious or downright illegitimate origin. There can be no argument that it makes for fascinating and worthwhile listening, even if some may find much of the programming historically suspect. The Odense organ sounds wonderful, although some of Bowyer’s registrations sound a little contrived – the accompaniment to “Wo soll ich fliehen hin” (from the Schubler Chorales) sounds for all the world like a duet between recorder and Jew’s harp. But there is no doubting that here is some wonderfully fresh and communicative playing which blows away whatever cobwebs might have accumulated over the centuries.
