REVIEW:

Marsalis gives his muse, Nicola Benedetti, plenty to get her teeth into. A couple of big cadenzas tap into her Celtic roots and show off her technical prowess. Fiddle Dance Suite sits somewhere between Bach’s unaccompanied Partitas and a Celtic shindig, though the jazzer’s personality is reflected in the way it feels like music created in the playing of it. Honestly, it’s hard to believe it’s written down at all.

Fine Fiddling March 17, 2020 By M. Bishop (Clackamas, OR) See All My Reviews "Nicola Benedetti does excellent work in performing the music on this album. The music, created by Wynton Marsalis for Benedetti, reveals that there is a short distance between jazz and Benedetti’s Scottish roots. The music as played by Benedetti has contemporary, urban foundations, as evinced in the first movement of the violin concerto, with remnants of Marsalis’ New Orleans culture coming through throughout the piece. The Philadelphia Orchestra accompanies Benedetti well during the violin concerto, and it plays at its best when executing the lush chordal tones that appear from time to time in the concerto orchestration. The sound quality is full of life. I highly recommend this album." Report Abuse
