Notes and Editorial Reviews

Sony Classical proudly announces an uncommonly attractive new batch of reissues from the CBS/Sony and RCA Victor/BMG back catalogues. This latest installment of the popular series showcases the reissue of a path-breaking composer edition as well as recordings by some of the labels’ greatest artists of the last half century. Schubert’s music for four hands has been singled out by experts as his most original contribution to the keyboard repertoire. In works like the Grand Duo and F minor Fantasy, Schubert took a popular form of domestic music-making, already ennobled by Mozart, and turned it into a genre of concert-hall stature. Today’s foremost interpreter of these marvellous pieces is the Israeli-German piano duo of Yaara Tal and Andreas Read more Groethuysen. Sony Classical is now, for the first time, releasing all of their Schubert recordings, made in 1993–95 at Grafenegg Castle in Austria. Gramophone’s reviewer wrote that it is “a joy” to hear this repertoire “done by great musicians and I can’t think of any duo partnership currently before the public that surpasses this one.” The critic also singled out the exceptionally clear and firm sound of the instrument, a large Fazioli Model 308 piano which the artists consider necessary to re-create the “symphonic ambitions” and dynamic range of this splendid music.

Excerpts of selct reviews from previously released volumes included in this set:

Schubert: Piano Music Four Hands Vol 1

The Fantasie is Schubert's best-known keyboard duet, inhabiting a private world in which despair features strongly. I wondered what Tal and Groethuysen would do with this great work and was not disappointed. Their basic tempo is a genuine Allegro molto moderato, and they know how to make transitions from one mood to the next. They are a very impressive duo.

Schubert: Piano Music Four Hands Vol 2

Theirs is a big modern sound, clearly unauthentic but very effective in conveying what the artists call the ‘symphonic’ aspects of the music. The recording is splendidly clear yet atmospheric, with a fine dynamic range. As for the playing, it is wonderfully controlled, affectionate while subtly poised and textured, with flexible tone and tempo – a model of Schubert duet style.

A Fitting Tribute to the Art of Schubert's Master May 31, 2019 By Howard Haimes (Arlington, VA) See All My Reviews "First and foremost, Schubert is the supreme master of song and melody. I am already familiar with many of his standard repertoire, but the transpositions for two-hands is somewhat unusual. Not knowing the entire complement of works on these discs, I was delighted to find the Fantasia in F minor D940, one of my favorites. I was delighted to note the varied texture and dimension used to create a very emotional portrayal from introspection to an exclamation. The collection is certainly worthy of any library and contains both traditional and obscure selections. Much effort and coordination went into rendering these discs as a series without triteness. They truly represent the best of Schubert's finest attributes as exemplified by beautiful pianistic interpretation without excessive flare or grandstanding. I usually think that 4-hands are a gimmick, but having seen many live performances of some of the selections, it can portray friendship and the finest aspects of bringing music to the listener."
