Notes and Editorial Reviews

Hector Berlioz, France’s greatest Romantic composer, exemplifies the spirit of his age – yet his genius was also ahead of its time.

Reflecting his colorful life, his music is astonishing for its originality and ambition, and for orchestration of groundbreaking brilliance.

This, the first-ever complete Berlioz edition, comprises carefully selected recordings and even includes works completely new to the catalog. The accompanying booklet, lavishly illustrated, contains a fascinating commentary from Berlioz biographer David Cairns, whose words bring the composer’s music still more vividly to life.

– Includes a bonus disc of remastered early historical recordings.

Yes, all of Berlioz, including classic and historical recordings, rarities and rediscoveries, from a huge range of performers. The opening track is a breath of fresh air, the Francs-Juges overture from Roger Norrington’s London Classical Players. The bonus disc of remastered early historical recordings is a fascinating extra. In terms of bang-for-your-Berlioz-buck, you can stop right here.

Performances fine, disks faulty March 3, 2019 By David Greetham (Lenox, MA) See All My Reviews "Many people, I'm sure, were delighted to hear the announcement that a complete Berlioz was to be released. The performances, in general, were very well done, but the disks themselves have proved to be technically very unsatisfactory. The disks have numerous "drop outs" when the music is interrupted by interference in the play back. If I had known it was going to be this bad, I would never have ordered the "complete" set. And then I've received the Berlioz set accompanying this months abridged set music set where the problem is even worse. There's hardly a single track that does not suffer from these "drop outs", severely interfering with one's listening pleasure. Ar the very least, this abridged disk should be replaced by a workkable one, and ideally the entire Berlioz collection should be withdrawn and replaced by a workable set. A pity, since Berlioz is one of my favourite composers, and I'd looked forward to enjoying thise collection. A bitter disappointment!" Report Abuse
