Notes and Editorial Reviews

These 1909 performances are the first recorded extensive excerpts of Richard Wagner's music in the history of recording. What is more, they are sung by such famous singers as Annie Krull (who created the title role in Strauss's 'Elektra') and one of the greatest singing actresses of all time, Emmy Destinn. In the 'Lohengrin' scene, Destinn reveals the impeccable technique, unique sound, and evenness of registers for which she was acclaimed. Her portrayal of Elsa is one of the finest to be heard. The second act of 'Tannhäuser' showcases the splendid singing talents of Krull as Elisabeth. Her unforced and velvety soprano is capable of both power and delicacy. Thankfully, sound engineers have not doctored the sound on these two recordings.
