One of the most prominent Bohemian composers working in Vienna during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Leopold Kozeluch was a prolific composer of instrumental music including seventeen symphonies. They are notable for mellifluous themes, sophisticated structures and, at times, a lyricism that seems to foreshadow the youthful works of Schubert. This unique recording draws on the original sources and corrects a number of mistakes encountered in previously published versions. This second volume of the complete edition of the symphonies of Leopold Kozeluch follows a first that was released in March 2017 and given a 9/9 score by ClassicsToday.com with plaudits for both conductor and orchestra: Marek Stilec leads lively, smartly pacedRead more performances, and gets fine playing from the ensemble. Sparkling Little SymphoniesMarch 30, 2019By Henry S. (Springfield, VA)See All My Reviews"This new Naxos disk provides yet another example of the remarkable musical standards set by Bohemian composers in the latter 18th and early 19th centuries. In this case, the listener is treated to four symphonic works by Leopold Kozeluch, who became a solid member of Vienna's musical world, and it is probably fair to say that Kozeluch's work there helped solidify the Hapsburg capital city as Europe's musical bastion. Contained on this recent release are four sprightly 'sinfonias,' which I believe are properly viewed as examples of the emerging form of the symphony, as it gradually developed out of the Baroque age. Generally light in texture, these works are exuberant, jaunty compositions that are an absolute delight to hear. Kozeluch's symphonies get a ravishing interpretation and performance from conductor Marek Stilec and his superb ensemble, the Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra of Pardubice. Naxos' first rate sonic qualities further enhance the overall attractiveness of this disk, which is Volume 2 in a series which deserves further development. So if you enjoy music from the latter 18th century as the Classical Age emerged, I think you will find Kozeluch's music well worth exploring. Recommended."Report Abuse
