The Vienna Boys Choir’s first recording of “The Blue Danube” waltz was made in 1933 and the choir last recorded Strauss in 1999. Nearly 20 years later, DG records the newest additions to the choir's Strauss repertoire, including Josef Strauss’ “Matrosen Polka,” Johann Strauss II’s “Banditen-Galopp,” and Josef Strauss’ eponymous “For Ever - Fast Polka.” The lyrics feature stories of sailors, ghosts, bandits, and hamsters – not to be taken too seriously, but to be heard and cherished for ever.

The Vienna Choir Boys are as much fun as ever, and they have a certain playful way of producing unusual sounds that is absent in the work of their English cathedral counterparts. The album is nicely recorded, and fans of the Choir Boys probably already know that they want it. Fans of Johann Strauss II may not know that, but they should.
