Notes and Editorial Reviews

Franz Schreker was a prominent figure in early 20th-century Austro-German music, his reputation as an opera composer rivaling that of Richard Strauss. The Prelude to a Drama is the concert overture of Schreker’s acclaimed opera Die Gezeichneten, a lurid drama involving murder and madness. Conceived as a theatrical pantomime, The Birthday of the Infanta adapts Oscar Wilde’s tragic tale of an ugly dwarf who dies of a broken heart, while the Romantic Suite fully explores the composer’s colorfully detailed and translucent orchestration and lyrical expressiveness. The Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra dates back to the beginnings of music broadcasting in 1923. Since then it has developed its position to become one of Berlin’s top orchestras, and Read more today is ranked in the highest echelon of German radio orchestras. JoAnn Falletta became the first female conductor to lead a major American ensemble upon her appointment as music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in 1999.

REVIEW:

Falletta obtains excellent playing from the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra with enormous climatic moments, opportunities for which are readily at hand in his late-Romantic, opulent orchestral scores. The sound quality from the German Radio is way beyond today’s norm. Unreservedly recommended.

Fabulously Rich Orchestral Scores June 9, 2019 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "This is an outstanding compact disk in every way. Early 20th century Austrian/German composer Franz Schreker's works feature lush orchestral palettes and vivid melodies, and these general characteristics are on full display in the 3 works comprising the program. Conductor JoAnn Falletta leads the superb Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra as it performs Prelude to a Drama (an extended overture), The Birthday of the Infante (a suite from a stage play) and Romantic Suite (pure music). My initial reaction to this recording was (and is) that its content is thoroughly engaging and attractive, with its deeply woven textures which paradigmatically mark the neo-Romantic works of major German composers in the early 1900's. Naxos' engineers have once again produced an audio masterpiece, with the Berlin RSO sound at world class levels. In my view, this is a disk which all fans of powerful orchestral music should try- it's really good. Highly recommended." Report Abuse
