Notes and Editorial Reviews

Famed for his sequence of Piano Concertos, Sterndale Bennett also wrote a small but distinguished body of chamber music. The String Quartet in G major is one of his earliest surviving works, revealing a precocious talent still strongly influenced by Haydn. Mendelssohn is the model for the Sextet, though Bennett’s highly virtuosic piano writing, with its concertante interplay, reinforces the work’s lyrical qualities and required dexterity as well as its advanced harmonies and hymnal beauty. The concise Chamber Trio radiates sheer charm while displaying an even greater grasp of structure and is the first English example in the trio form where both string instruments are given parts independent of the piano. The Villiers Quartet are British Read more chamber music specialists. Their previous release of the Delius and Elgar Quartets was very well reviewed. MusicWeb International wrote: “This is a desirable chamber release with convincing and stylish playing from the Villiers Quartet who offer endearing expression and impeccable intonation throughout.” Read less

Superb- A Great Discovery September 7, 2019 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "This Naxos disk is one of the best new chamber music recordings I've heard in quite a while and was for me a major discovery. The 3 works contained on this recent release were composed by William Sterndale Bennett between the ages of 19 and 25. The maturity of the entire program, particularly the precocious Sextet, thus constitutes an amazing achievement, reminiscent of what Mozart and Mendelssohn accomplished at early ages. I would characterize the program as early Romantic, full of optimism and abundant lyricism. Of particular interest is the quality of the piano scoring in the Sextet and Trio, reflecting Bennett's mastery of this instrument. Performed with sharp discipline and obvious enthusiasm by England's outstanding Villiers Quartet (augmented in the Sextet), the recording is an audio knockout; dynamics are strongly articulated, and the sonic quality is beyond reproach. I was greatly impressed upon first listening to this disk; thus, I have no hesitation about giving it a hearty recommendation." Report Abuse
