Notes and Editorial Reviews

Christopher Maltman won the Lieder prize at the 1997 Cardiff Singer of the World competition--the same competition that launched Bryn Terfel. Maltman's recording work has focussed mostly on British repertoire: elsewhere he has recorded songs of John Ireland, Arthur Somervell, and Peter Warlock, and here he presents a selection of Britain's tremendous body of neglected songs with orchestral accompaniment. All the songs on this program were orchestrated by their composers, except for those of Ivor Gurney--Gerald Finzi set the 'Five Elizabethan Songs' for orchestra after Gurney's death, and "By a bierside" and "In Flanders" were orchestrated by Herbert Howells, the friend and fellow student of Charles Stanford to whom Gurney had sent the Read more manuscripts from the trenches of World War I.
Maltman is well-suited to the material in both voice and dramatic sense. He has plenty of power for the opening of Parry's "The North Wind," yet a rare sensitivity and control in songs which require a softer touch, like Stanford's "To the soul." With fully idiomatic support from Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, this disc is an essential for all lovers of British music and fine singing. Read less
