Notes and Editorial Reviews

As a leading virtuoso who premiered Beethoven’s final violin sonata with the Archduke Rudolph, Rode was at the center of European musical life, his compositions sitting at the apex of the French violin school. The final volume in this acclaimed series presents one of his most inspired pieces, the Violin Concerto No. 11 in D major, lyrically expressive and full of good-humored zest. Violin Concerto No. 12 in E major is notable for the ingenious ways in which, through trills, staccato, spiccato and cadenzas, Rode heightens the music’s bravura. Violinist Friedemann Eichhorn studied with Valery Gradow at the University of Music in Mannheim, with Alberto Lysy at the International Menuhim Music Academy in Gstaad, Switzerland, and with Margaret Read more Pardee at The Juilliard School in New York. He performs with many renowned orchestras across the globe, and his previous recordings for Naxos were highly acclaimed. Read less

Outstanding- A Real Treat August 31, 2018 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "This Naxos disk is the final installment in its acclaimed series of violin concertos by French composer Pierre Rode. All of the previous recordings have been superb, and this one is no exception. Rode, who began his musical career amidst the turbulence of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Era, does not appear to have let this chaotic social environment affect his musical output. Both concertos are elegant examples of the suave sophistication characteristic of the mature Classical and emergent Romantic periods- attractive melodic content, lyrically fresh solo violin parts, and compact, exquisitely proportioned architectures in each piece. Soloist Friedemann Eichhorn plays these concertos with a light, sympathetic touch, and the orchestral backing of Germany's Jena Philharmonic Orchestra is outstanding under conductor Nicholas Pasquet's direction. As a set of bookend pieces, the recording leads off with a short violin and orchestral work entitled 'Air varie' in E Major' and ends with a similar composition in D Major. All of the disks in this series, and especially this one, provide compelling evidence that lesser known yet top notch composers performed musical wonders in addition to the usual gallery of suspects from this general time frame- Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. I urge all Arkivmusic patrons to consider this one- it is really good. Recommended all the way for a great listening experience." Report Abuse
