This release is the 49th volume in the Naxos series of the complete works of Franz Liszt. Volume 49 features a wide-ranging selection of dance pieces. The Valses oubliées reveal a compound of wistful nostalgia and advanced harmonies while the remarkable Csárdás macabre, a characteristic Hungarian folk-dance, is full of innovative features. The effervescent Mazurka brillante is a very rare example of Liszt making original use of this Polish form, whilst simultaneously transforming it. The Grand Galop cromatique, heard here in two versions, is a bravura encore piece that the young Liszt often played in his virtuoso recitals. The works are presented on this release by Goran Filipec, recent laureate of the Granc Prix duRead more Disque of the Ferenc Liszt Society of Budapest. Read less
The Liszt Project Rolls On!June 25, 2018By Henry S. (Springfield, VA)See All My Reviews"Croatian pianist Goran Filipec does the honors here in Naxos' latest installment of the solo piano music of Franz Liszt. Naxos titles this recording simply as 'Dances', which is appropriate, given the complex titles assigned by the composer to the various selections. The individual pieces display a wide variety of tempos and moods, but all appear to have their foundations in Hungarian melodies, or at least Liszt's vision of them. Filipec is a supremely talented artist, and his work on this program is absolutely fabulous. As usual, Naxos' audio engineering is first class, resulting in a recording of distinction. Recommended."Report Abuse
