Notes and Editorial Reviews

To mark Esa-Pekka Salonen’s 60th birthday year in 2018, Sony/BMG lavishes big box treatment upon the conductor’s complete Sony Classical recordings, mostly dating from the mid-1980s until 2001. The contents mainly focus on 20th-century music, where Salonen’s confident authority and insights particularly thrive, regardless of orchestra.

His Bartók, Debussy, Nielsen, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Strauss, Stravinsky, and Hindemith hold their own in an increasingly competitive catalog. So do his superb Los Angeles Philharmonic Mahler Third and Fourth symphonies, but not a surprisingly flat-footed Das Lied von der Erde with Placido Domingo and Bo Skovhus. Among his seven Sony Carl Nielsen discs, Salonen’s forthright readings of
Read more the Third and Sixth symphonies stand out, not to mention Cho-Liang Lin’s stunning reference-worthy violin concerto coupled with an equally terrific Sibelius concerto. I marginally prefer the latter to Salonen’s slicker version with soloist Joshua Bell, who nevertheless knocks John Corigliano’s “Red Violin” Chaconne out of the park. Messiaen’s Turangalila Symphony (sound clip) and Des canyons lux etoiles sound even more colorful and texturally transparent than I recall from 30 years ago.

Discography-wise, one rarely bests Salonen in later 20th-century fare by composers like Ligeti, Saariaho, Lindberg, Takemitsu, Hillborg, Lutoslawski, and Salonen himself. Some listeners will enjoy composer/trumpeter Wynton Marsalis’ derivative oratorio All Rise more than I, yet his youthful classical chops shine in Henri Tomasi’s inventive Trumpet Concerto.

Sony could count on Salonen for fresh and stimulating program ideas, as borne out in CDs respectively devoted to orchestral transcriptions of Bach, Bernard Herrmann film scores, the maverick Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas, Luigi Dallapiccola’s one-act opera Il prigionero, and Lars-Erik Larsson’s rarely-heard cantata Förklädd Gud. And don’t forget that the Rachmaninov Second and Third concertos issued by Concert Artist and attributed to pianist Joyce Hatto were stolen from Salonen’s Philharmonia Orchestra recording with soloist Yefim Bronfman.

Sony/BMG’s packaging is a boon for space-starved collectors: A compact cube houses the CDs in thin cardboard sleeves that replicate the original jacket artwork, together with a 114-page booklet containing full discographical information and informative notes by the Los Angeles Times’ chief music critic Mark Swed, who extensively covered Salonen’s music directorship at the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Music lovers wishing to build a solid 20th-century orchestral CD library will get both a substantial jump start and a lasting, satisfying investment out of this collection.

Recordings worth preserving June 3, 2018 By Robert C. (Tucson, AZ) See All My Reviews "I have no problem giving these performances and their recording 5 stars. The technology and the technique have grown over the years but random sampling of the contents re-enforces my enthusiasm and respect for the art and persona of Salonen. I owned several dozen of these recording before buying The Box. The Box is what is problematic for me. Granted I own many of these boxes but each time I buy one I get the same impression: fine performances preserved at the technological height of the day they were recorded but. . . I feel this is recording with a sense of marketing desperation. What do we have? What can we sell? Itunes, Spotify, none of these contemporary technologies for music conceive of music as anything but a marketable item - viz. the long history of pop music. As happy as I am to have them, I am deeply saddened to have these fine representatives of a western artistic tradition promulgated without any sense of that tradition and its history - and what, I thought for years, was its promise. Now I'm not so sure. Enjoy." Report Abuse
