Masterful RavelJuly 20, 2012By s. swellander (San Antonio, TX)See All My Reviews"I've read that Maurice Ravel, a discerning perfectionist, had a particular preference for Andre Cluytens as conductor for his orchestral works. Yet, EMI has dropped this masterful collection from its current catalog, leaving Arkiv to take up the slack. Again, thank God for the folks at Arkiv for doing their part to rescue us from a world of chronic banality.
True, there are plenty of great Ravel recording out there, so life would not be completely banal without Cluytens, but this two disc set remains one of the great Ravel collections. The stereo recordings date back to the sixties, yet sound freshly minted and detailed, perhaps not quite as sumptuously as the digital Boulez on DG, but to my ears more viscerally exciting. Cluytens ran a tight ship, and whipped some lesser known French and Belgian orchestras into high level music making, and never without passion and energy. The Paris Conservatory Orchestra was perfect for this music and could not have recorded it for EMI under a finer leader.
Being a special order Arkiv exclusive, this set is not as inexpensive as most recordings of this vintage, especially in this age of deeply discounted back-catalog box sets. But, even at premium price, this is a great value. The sound is unlikely to disappoint anyone short of the most finicky boutique audiophile (my ears are too old for such nonsense). If you are looking for very good sound and truly great performance, look no further."Report Abuse
