During Riccardo Muti s 19-year tenure as La Scala s music director, his relationship with the Filarmonica della Scala extended beyond the opera pit. The seven-CD set Riccardo Muti conducts Italian Masters celebrates their shared Italian heritage with a mixture of much-loved Verdi overtures, modern classics from Nino Rota ( uniformly stunning AllMusic Guide) and enticing works from the turn of the century by the likes of Casella, Martucci and Busoni (on an album successful in every respect , according to Gramophone). Busoni s Turandot Suite (like the orchestral works also released here by operatic composers Ponchielli, Catalani and Puccini) is perfectly suited to an orchestra and conductor at home in both dramatic and symphonic repertoires.Read more How is it possible for so attractive, witty and artful a work to lay neglected for so long? enthused Gramophone. Magnificent musicAugust 13, 2018By G. Prohl (KENT, WA)See All My Reviews"brilliant playing, incisive conducting all adds up to one of the best music investments I've ever made, and for seven discs at this ridiculously low price, a super bargain to boot. Muti is on fire throughout and obviously feels this music deeply in his blood. The La Scala Orchestra play like Gods. And then there's the music itself. Why on earth is the vast majority of this collection virtually unknown? So much beautiful, melodic, superbly crafted music on each of the seven discs and not a dud in the bunch. I've been playing them nonstop since getting them over a month ago and they only improve with each listening. If you have any interest in discovering some splendid, hidden gems of the orchestral repertoire, do yourself a big favor and buy this collection ASAP, you won't regret it."Report Abuse
Riccardo Muti ConductsJune 5, 2018By Wendel H Yale (Reston, VA)See All My Reviews"This album is all about the insightful, musical conducting of Riccardo Muti. All of these works are beautifully paced, sensitively phrased, and artfully phrased by Muti. The program includes excellent performances of Verdi and Puccini as well as less-well-known composers Casella, Catalani and Martucci. Nino Rota's film and concert works show that he was indeed a master of his art. There are no background notes, but all of this information is available on the internet."Report Abuse
