REVIEW:

Here we have, on 57 mostly well-packed CDs, the almost complete Boston Symphony recordings on Deutsche Grammophon, including everything recorded (some newly released) by the superlative Boston Symphony Chamber Players, and a bonus disc available for the first time of Seiji Ozawa leading a lively and lyrical Brahms Second Symphony, Rossini’s Semiramide Overture, and Paganini’s Moto perpetuo. Fine as these are, the real value in this set lies in the fact that it largely avoids the classical and German standard repertoire to focus on what this orchestra did best: French music, twentieth-century classics, Russian repertoire–all playing to its various conductors’ respective strengths.

And in those few instances were we do get symphonic warhorses, the results are almost invariably memorable: Jochum’s reference Mozart “Jupiter” and Schubert “Unfinished,” Kubelik’s Beeethoven Fifth, and Ozawa’s remarkably fine Brahms and Mahler First Symphonies. In fact, it’s amazing just how many of these performances remain among the best available. I’m thinking about Abbado’s Debussy Nocturnes and Scriabin Poem of Ecstasy, Kubelik’s Má vlast and Bartók Concerto for Orchestra, everything by William Steinberg (Hindemith, Holst, and R. Strauss), and those fabulous early Michael Tilson Thomas recordings, including Ives’ Three Places in New England, Ruggles’ Sun-Treader, Piston’s Second Symphony, Schuman’s Violin Concerto with Paul Zukofsky, Debussy’s Images, Tchaikovsky’s First Symphony, and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Bernstein’s A Faust Symphony also hasn’t been bettered, although his final recording–Britten and Beethoven–remains a sad memento of a dying artist.

All of which brings us to Seiji Ozawa, the conductor who arguably outstayed his welcome, but whose recorded legacy for DG shows him more often than not operating at his considerable best. His complete Ravel orchestral music is outstanding–better than Munch, to be fair–and if his Berlioz Symphonie fantastique still sounds under-characterized, his Romeo et Juliette and Damnation of Faust are both exceptional. His complete Russian ballets–Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and The Nutcracker plus Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet–remain essential purchases, as do his two splendid Respighi discs (the Roman tone poems and the Ancient Airs and Dances). You won’t hear Poulenc’s Gloria, Stabat Mater, Organ Concerto (sound clip), and Concert champêtre better done anywhere (but where is the Franck Symphony originally coupled with the Organ Concerto?). The disc of Fauré orchestral music is very special, as is the music to Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (sound clip). Polish and elegance without slickness–excitement without vulgarity–that’s what Ozawa offered when he was on form, as here. OK, this version of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade certainly won’t raise the roof, and his Tchaikovsky Pathétique has more lyrical grace than spontaneous passion, but on the whole Ozawa’s achievement here is amazingly consistent and impressive taken as a whole.

We should also not forget that he often accompanied soloists with great sympathy and conviction. Perlman’s coupling of the Berg and Stravinsky Violin Concertos remains justly acclaimed; the Shostakovich Second Cello Concerto with Rostropovich has aged very well; and what are arguably Krystian Zimerman’s two best concerto recordings, of Rachmaninov and Liszt, were made in Boston. Also in the concerto department, you get a disc of John Williams leading his own music for violin and orchestra with Gil Shaham, Sophia Gubaidulina’s not terribly attractive Offertorium with Gidon Kremer under Charles Dutoit (but his Shostakovich/Schumann coupling is missing), and André Previn’s diffuse homage to his then wife, Anne-Sophie Mutter.

Finally, the set includes all of the Shostakovich symphonies yet recorded by current Music Director Andris Nelsons, including an excellent new version of the Sixth not otherwise released. This is one of the few mega-sets that can be recommended as a totality, a salutary reminder that great orchestras have a personality all their own, and deserve the solo spotlight once in a while. Speaking of which, I would be remiss if I did not mention that there is a huge repertory gap that remains to be filled: the compete DG Boston Pops recordings. The difference between the two orchestras is one of name only, really, and we badly need a Big Box of light music played at Pops standards. However, between this box and the Munch set on RCA, the Boston Symphony legacy has been about as well documented, and sounds as impressive, as that of any major orchestra anywhere.
