Charles Villiers Stanford was one of the pillars of English musical life in the early twentieth century. Known to the public as a composer and conductor of the Leeds Philharmonic, he was also, in his capacity as Professor of Composition at the Royal College of Music, mentor to an important generation of emergent English composers, including Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams. In addition, he was director of the Leeds Triennial Choral Festival, which served to further the English oratorio tradition, and it is to that tradition that much of his music belongs.
The Stabat Mater, subtitled "Symphonic Cantata" is one of Stanford's most substantial choral works. It was highly esteemed by Vaughan Williams and bears some similarities to
