VERACINI Overtures: No. 1 in B?; No. 2 in F; No. 3 in B?; No. 4 in F; No. 6 in B? • Reinhard Goebel, cond; Musica Antiqua Köln • BRILLIANT 93893 (70:26)
This is a direct rerelease of five of Veracini’s overture-suites recorded in 1993, and originally issued as Archiv 439 937-2. The performances are nearly two decades old—quite a long time in early-music terms—but stand up well. Musica Antiqua Köln under Reinhard Goebel delivers its usual mix of well accented, highly disciplined performances, with aRead more variety of tempos that never steps over the edge into attention-getting gimmickry. Rhythms are incisive; inner voices are clearly outlined. Sound is good, too, spacious and transparent, yet with none of the addiction to over-resonant acoustics that small Baroque orchestras and chamber ensembles frequently employ, to their detriment.
The only reason to hold off from buying this album that I can foresee is a desire to get all the overture-suites along with the rest of Veracini’s concertos and sonatas: a project of violinist-conductor Federico Guglielmo that’s recently seen its first release, on cpo 777 302-2. But as these are being issued in a grab-bag fashion, with various pieces mixed in no particular order on each album, that could mean waiting quite a while. In the meantime, this one will do handsomely. The low price certainly isn’t a drawback, either.
