Notes and Editorial Reviews

Early Wagner can be thrilling, or it can be trashy. Sometimes, I confess, it can be both (think Mravinsky’s Lohengrin Act III Prelude), but if we can get thrilling and not trashy, that’s the best option. Hiroshi Wakasugi and the Staatskapelle Dresden manage this seemingly impossible feat. Sensible tempos combine with sharp rhythms, clear textures, and superbly judged balances to project the stormy drama of the Dutchman overture, the nobility of Tannhäuser, and the luminous serenity of Lohengrin’s Act I Prelude without a trace of tackiness.

Best of all, though, is Rienzi. Possibly the most vulgar piece to appear in the entire nineteenth century, this performance makes it sound as
Read more it should: like slightly demented, humorless Rossini (sound clip). Wakasugi’s interpretations really are models of good taste and idiomatic style. There is no finer collection of these pieces on any label–wonderfully played, perfectly recorded, and an essential acquisition for fans of great Wagner playing and interpretation.
