Notes and Editorial Reviews

Edward Gardner's treatment of the Introduction and Allegro is notable for its clarity and carefully graded textures, as well as delivering a real punch in the peroration.

Gardner adopts a similar approach to the First Symphony, too, with real payoff in the first and last movements. The skilfully paced final movement allows the return of the motto theme that opened the symphony to carry real weight – the “great charity and a massive hope in the future” – that Elgar imagined.
