A Classic Alpine Symphony and More July 22, 2012
By G. Dollinger (Bellflower, CA) See All My Reviews
"This excellent two CD compilation of Strauss works is worth the price for Zubin Mehta's Alpine Symphony alone. I remember the first time I heard it when it was released on LP back in the late 70's. If I hadn't known it was the Los Angeles Philharmonic I would have assumed I was listening to the Chicago Symphony. That is how good the L.A. Phil. had become under Mehta by the time this recording was made. It remains not only one of their best but also one of the classic recordings of the Alpine Symphony. The Sinfonia Domestica, performed by the same forces, is almost as fine.
Antal Dorati and the Detroit Symphony make a compelling case for the early tone poem Macbeth, and Gary Graffman, Andre Previn and the Vienna Philharmonic perform the Parergon ("compliment") Zur Symphonie Domestica with great panache.
These are really splendid performances!
