Notes and Editorial Reviews

Though this 1958 recording is a studio production, the characters sometimes seem so mobile it makes you dizzy and Figaro, in particular, gets around enough for several people. The Vienna Philharmonic makes a lovely sound, but again its contribution is tinkered with. If you want this set, it will be for the excellently sung Susanna of Peters and Figaro of Tozzi, hardly bettered. Nor was the Countess ever more appealing than when incarnated by the matchless della Casa.

Very Fine Figaro February 4, 2013 By Dave Powers (Grimsby, ON) See All My Reviews "This 1958 recording should appeal to any lover of this opera: it has excellent sound, uniformly strong cast and authoritative conducting. Perhaps it will be of most interest to those of us who remember Met performances from the 50s and early 60s, as, with the exception of the Antonio and Barbarina, the cast is all from the Met roster. (Even Elysia Field and Appassionata Schultz are really Peters and Elias in disguise.) While Cesare Siepi was the Figaro of the day, Tozzi was no stranger to the role and acquits himself well here. And one might wish that the rich-voiced London had performed the Count more often in America. Peters and Elias are excellent and Lisa della Casa who virtually owned the role of the Countess, sings with her usual cool poise and elegance. Very fine recording offered by ArkivMusic at an excellent price!" Report Abuse
great recording April 22, 2012 By Michel M. (Chateauguay, Quebec) See All My Reviews "This mostly Metropolitan Opera cast (Tozzi, Peters, Della Casa, London, Elias, Warfield, Corena) recorded in Vienna in 1958 under Erich Leinsdorf's brisk and precise leadership and in great stereo sound offers a lively and beautifully sung performance of this timeless masterpiece which is Nozze di Figaro. This version is also complete and includes Marcellina's and Basilio's often cut arias in Act IV.
