Notes and Editorial Reviews

Donald Grantham's From the Diaries of Adam and Eve is based upon a novella by Mark Twain. In this work, Twain traces the development of Adam and Eve's relationship from their first meeting to Eve's death forty years after the expulsion from Eden. Donald Grantham resides in Austin, Texas and is Professor of Composition at the University of Texas at Austin. With Kent Kennan he is co-author of The Technique of Orchestration. Dan Welcher's Zephyrus was written between April and November 1990, in Austin, Aspen and Honolulu and is dedicated to the Chamber Soloists of Austin. Welcher writes: "Works of chamber music including flute and strings are not nearly as numerous as those for clarinet, or even oboe. Probably the reason for this is the less Read more assertive, more pure tone the flute possesses - it cannot compete for volume or range with the clarinet, except in its top octave, and the oboe's tone is more penetrating and easily discerned from within a string texture." Today Dan Welcher is also a Professor of Composition at the School of Music, University of Texas, Austin. Kent Kennan was born in 1913 and taught theory and composition at the University of Texas at Austin from 1940 until his retirement in 1983, with the exception of four years in the service and two years on the faculty of Ohio State University. Mr. Kennan has composed for orchestra, chamber ensembles, chorus, piano, voice and organ. His best known composition is Night Soliloquy which has been performed by conductors from Toscanini and Ormandy to Ozawa. Read less
