After she won the first prize at the Japan National Music Competition, Akiko Ebi was invited by the French government to study in Paris at the National Conservatory. Here she studied with Aldo Ciccolini. In 1975 she was awarded the Grand Prize together with four special prizes given by Artur Rubinstein at the International Long-Thibaud Competition. She also won many other prizes for her Chopin performances. Her Chopin has long been in the true grand manner. What is so appealing about her approach is that she ignores the safe, cautious route and goes all out, letting her own emotional reaction to the music be projected to her audience.
