Notes and Editorial Reviews

This superb double disc of concertos by Mozart will satisfy those who really appreciate his works for wind instruments. Mozart himself did not play any wind instruments; instead, he composed those works with the particular skills of various musicians in mind.
The first disc is comprised of three beautiful concertos: Clarinet Concerto in A major, K622, Flute Concerto No. 1 in G major, K313, and Oboe Concerto in C major, K314. The first performance by the London Symphony Orchestra with Gervase de Peyer exalts in the autumn-like mellowness of Mozart's clarinet concerto, which was composed only months before his death. Flutist William Bennett and the English Chamber Orchestra perform the colorful flute concerto and the Cleveland Orchestra
Read more performs the oboe concerto with soloist John Mack.
Though the Bassoon Concerto was written when Mozart was only 18, it is still brilliant. The Cleveland Orchestra captures it beautifully here. Finally, an exceptional version of Mozart's Horn Concertos by the London Symphony Orchestra rounds out the collection. French Hornist Barry Tuckwell gives a regal performance. The quality of all the music on this set is just one reason why Decca is such a great label. Read less
