Notes and Editorial Reviews

There are times when the maestro's conducting feels slow and stately, even if the copper-bottomed integrity of his approach silences a fair many doubts. The recording boasts one of the starriest casts ever assembled: Schwarzkopf, Ludwig, and Hoffgen as the Three Ladies, Gundula Janowitz is predictably wonderful as Pamina, while Lucia Popp's Queen of the Night is pretty much unbeatable. The set leaves out all dialog. Includes a full libretto with translations and a newly commissioned essay about the recording, plus some wonderful acrchive photos of the sessions themselves. It's all housed in a little cloth-bound book, easily fitted on CD shelves.
