Great for Some People October 23, 2017 By William K Schultz (Silver Spring, MD) See All My Reviews "I purchased this 7-CD set of Bach Cantatas because my church choir was doing two of them which perked my interest in Bach's cantatas. Hitherto I had not particularly liked them. This collection provides a great selection of thirty cantatas selected from Harnoncourt's recording of all of them. Many folks will find the performances superb, but I was slightly disappointed for two reasons. The first is the "no-girls-allowed" performance forces. Most, but not all, of the cantatas use boy sopranos and altos for the female parts, both in the chorus and in the solos. I would much rather hear mature women perform this music than highly-talented, to be sure, pre-teens. Second, no texts or translations are provided, not even the titles of the cantatas. In short, many folks will probably like this set, but I am a little disappointed." Report Abuse
