Notes and Editorial Reviews

MOZART Symphonies: in D, “Haffner”; in C, “Jupiter” Wolfgang Sawallisch, cond; Bavarian RSO PROFIL 7021 (54:12)

Although it is never explicitly stated in the package, these are live performances before polite, appreciative audiences: they were previously issued in 1998. These are robust performances led by a conductor seemingly without quirks: perhaps that’s the reason Sawallisch was in the shadow of the likes of Karajan during much Read more of his career. But he conducted superb recordings of Mozart operas, symphonies, and concertos (with Annie Fischer). His Beethoven is just as good, and though he is best known for conducting German and Austrian composers, his Tchaikovsky and Dvo?ák are also formidable. There’s a moment in the third movement of the “Haffner” performance here in which Sawallisch stomps his foot on the downbeat. I find it endearing. Not surprisingly, his Mozart is rhythmically compelling and, as we hear in the finale of the “Haffner,” precise. He is conducting a large orchestra that plays meticulously, yet with admirable energy, which still manages to convey convincingly the singing long lines as well as the underlying drama of the Andante cantabile of the “Jupiter.” There is a slight digital edge to the sound, but this recording stacks up well against most any recordings, including the Neville Marriner disc that has exactly this pairing.
