Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Sony Classical Masters series invariably offers cornerstones of the symphonic repertoire, and this new release includes two major complete cycles. One comes from the 19th century: the six symphonies of Tchaikovsky performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra – arguably the Tchaikovsky orchestra – under its music director Yuri Temirkanov. BBC Music Magazine praised the “remarkable vividness and warmth of the playing” in reviewing these recordings made in the “truthful acoustics of the wonderful 1830s’ hall in which the orchestra lives and breathes.” The Sony Classical Masters series invariably offers cornerstones of the symphonic repertoire, and this new release includes two major complete cycles.  Temirkanov in his best  March 24, 2019 By JOEL C. (HAIFA, Israel) See All My Reviews "Yuri Temirkanov in considered one of the best conductors emerging from the Soviet Union. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra made itself a reputation for the marvelous performance of Tchaikovsky symphonies under the button of the best conductors in the west . All symphonies are played under sheer devotion and elan." Report Abuse
Some of my new favorite recordings. February 28, 2019 By Brian L. (AURORA, CO) See All My Reviews "With the exception of #3 "Polish" and Fatum (both which I find rather uninspired, especially the latter!) I love these symphonies and the other works included. And these performances go to the top (or near it) of my rather considerable heap of Tchaikovsky recordings. (The exception is Symphony #4—the performance seems, at first blush, a bit mannered and I will need to re-listen to decide how it will wear in repeated hearings.) There is care over details that really jumps out as I listen. The playing is excellent as is the sound. At this price, one needn't hesitate! A great starter set if you have little or no Tchaikovsky. And if you have a lot, these still deserve a listen. Temirkanov is a conductor I am growing increasingly fond of. He brings new details to light without over-interpretation. Wonderful and highly recommended!" Report Abuse
