Notes and Editorial Reviews

The English cellist Steven Isserlis has been a leading light on the international musical scene for more than three decades. His complete recordings for RCA Victor – including concertos and chamber works by Haydn, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Brahms, Grieg, Saint-Saëns, Anton Rubinstein, Fauré, Richard Strauss, Janácek, Bloch, Prokofiev, Shostakovich and John Tavener – will now be available in a 12-CD box. “Steven Isserlis amazes in music whose tantalising combination of exquisite poetry and scintillating bravura he was born to play,” wrote BBC Music Magazine. ClassicsToday.com acclaimed his recording of Strauss’s Don Quixote with Lorin Maazel and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra as one of the finest: “Not even Read more Fournier and Szell conjured up the image of the elderly knight’s vigil over his rusty armor and slumbering servant more movingly.” Read less

Isserlis at his best January 3, 2017 By Michael C. See All My Reviews "Exciting collection of Steven Isserlis. Concertos by Haydn, Mendelsohn, Schumann, Saint-Saens. The icings are the smaller pieces - sonatas by Shostakovich, Faure, Strauss. All with the signature Isserlis technical and emotional mastery. Highly recommended by this (amateur!) cellist."
