Notes and Editorial Reviews

The outer movements of the First Symphony are fiery but not over-driven. I've not heard the work's slow movement better done: solemn but chaste, with the best kind of historically informed playing on a traditional, only slightly reduced orchestra. The strings of the LSO take the most careful note and almost sing the melody as if it were set to words.

In the Fourth, the strings once again display unrivaled agility, and even work in some cheeky portamento into the third theme of the work's opening movement. Taken at a true presto, the finale never spins out of control but sounds as though it might at any moment. Outstanding.
