Notes and Editorial Reviews
This new release is the first ever recording of Josep Galles’ harpsichord sonatas. Galles was a composer who lived during the transition from the Baroque to the Classical periods. Like his contemporaries such as Domenico Scarlatti, his keyboard sonatas show the slow transition from one style to the other. Each sonata is a one movement work in binary form. He utilizes folkloristic patterns from Spanish music throughout the works, including dance rhythms, exotic modal scales, and extravagant modulations. Michele Benuzzi discovered these works, and here performs them. Her previous albums have been praised by critics such as MusicWeb who wrote, “Excellent… one of the most interesting CD’s I have heard of late.”
