Bruckner's original version of the Fourth symphony is a touch lighter and wilder than the revised work, especially in the first movement. It's also more disjointed, less well integrated, with a totally different and remarkably uninteresting stop-and-start scherzo. Kent Nagano's performance is magnificently played and unerringly paced. The slow movement is particularly beautiful, and he even captures as much character as possible in that rather lame scherzo. My only reservation, and it's a very slight one, concerns the fact that he treats the work with the sort of majestic grandeur more suitable to the later version. terms his view is wholly convincing, and the finale is particularly satisfying (no mean feat in Bruckner). The sonics, as usual from this source, are also excellent.
