Notes and Editorial Reviews

This disc contains both ADD and DDD recordings.

Operatic sopranos, known as divas (for various reasons, musical and otherwise) have often upstaged entire performances with a single aria. THE ULTIMATE DIVAS ALBUM gives the listener many opportunities to hear famous arias made perhaps even more famous (in this century) due to the singer at hand. There are divas from the past (Flagstad, Nilsson), the present (Bartoli, Fleming), and some who have recently entered retirement (Horne, Freni). Kiri te Kanawa and Frederica von Stade have sung operas of many different composers, but both will always be associated with their respective roles of The Countess and Cherubino from 'Le Nozze di Figaro.' To hear te Kanawa sing "Dove sono" is a revelation; von Stade's singing of "Voi che sapete" and her portrayal of Cherubino are recognized as historic. Other treats include Joan Sutherland's "Casta diva" (although it would have been nice to include one of the Callas versions on the disc), and Zinka Milanov's "Suicidio!" from 'La Gioconda.' A must-have diva disc. Read less
