For this disc, the celebrated young pianist Vassily Primakov has recorded 21 out of the 51 Chopin mazurkas. By emphasizing their rhythmic life and their inner contrasts, he makes them sparkle. In the A? Mazurka, op. 59/2, he sounds almost impulsive as he lets go in bold rushes, and then, using convincingly nuanced rubato and a wide dynamic range, he pulls back. I never feel that I am watching a pianist irrationally interpret these familiar pieces in order to show off his technique or originality. Instead, Primakov manages to suggest the drama within each mazurka. When I heard the opening Mazurka in C, op. 24/2, I thought that there was something almost glassy in the performance. Perhaps there is at times; yet I also find the minor-key pieces, such as the first Mazurka in A Minor, songful. Rubinstein made these pieces sound more suggestively Romantic, perhaps. Primakov clearly revels in the pounding chords of the Mazurka in C, op. 56/2. But that joy is matched by a sensitivity to the melodic line elsewhere. I’ve been listening to one of the greatest, and it seems to me, relatively unappreciated, recordings of most of these works, those by William Kapell. I find Kapell even more sensitive—and equally joyous. But Primakov has made a Chopin recording everyone should hear.
