A Triple hit--Blomstedt, San Francisco and Sib March 26, 2015 By Tony Engleton See All My Reviews "03-26-2015 Here is a London release with the San Francisco Sym. Orch. performing under their former Music Director, Herbert Blomstedt, the Symphony in D, #2, by Jean Sibelius. Also included on this full priced disk are Tapiola, and the Valse Triste, op. 44, #1. Total timing for the symphony is 44:33, and with the additional works, the total playing time rises to a generous 68:58. The sound? The typical great London quality--full bodied, rich and like "being there." The recording was made in late May of 1991, in the SF home venue of Davies Hall. This entire CD is hocked full of one glorious passage after another, and the attention to detail is surgically so precise as to rival even Fritz Reiner in Chicago. Regardless of the tempo, mod or "message" be conveyed by the composer, the San Franciscans respond with top flight quality and eloquence. Blomstedt'scomunications are direct, concise and clearly delineated. And the sound of that bras? Wow, what glory. The full, rich and powerfully present metal section never ceases to send chils up and down my spine. I don't think it far-fetched to say that performances like these with this terrific sound is one of the glories of the uman race. Do not delay with thid decision. Rather, treat yourselves to a fabulous recording, one of the very best second symphonies of al time. My warmest regards to al, and best wishes as well. We have just passed the mi" Report Abuse
