Spectacular and Historically notable September 26, 2016 By Robert Marcus (Santa Fe, NM) See All My Reviews "This is a truly spectacular set of DVDs. Not only are the concerts sublime, but there are a number of extra-musical aspects that I find fascinating. These include the observation that when the series starts in 1991, there were almost NO women in the Berlin Phil, and by progressing through the years the number has increased to the point that today it is almost a respectable percentage. It also shows the progression of Barenboim's conducting technique over time, from his very first, quite stiff, baton technique, to a much more relaxed approach later on. The turnover of personnel and the age-related changes in those who remain over time is also very interesting to follow. Having become accustomed to today's programs that barely exceed an hour of music, it is amazing to have these very long, thrilling programs." Report Abuse
