Notes and Editorial Reviews

German conductor Christian Thielemann chose Anton Bruckner’s magnificent Seventh Symphony to mark his inauguration as principal conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden in 2012, the live recording of which is included in this release. One of Bruckner’s most famous symphonies, his Symphony No. 7 in E Major was written between 1881 and 1883, and received its premiere on December 30, 1884. The work is dedicated to Ludwig II of Bavaria. This album couples Bruckner’s symphony with Richard Wagner’s “Das Liebesmahl der Apostel.” This work for orchestra and male chorus is seldom performed, and is widely overshadowed by Wagner’s more famous works.  Beautiful Bruckner and Wagner live recording July 30, 2018 By Gail M. (Goleta, CA) See All My Reviews "This Bruckner 7th is an almost old-fashioned performance, with a tastefully done cymbal crash in the adagio. This live recording matches Thielemann's Bruckner 4th, if you have heard it. The recording gives a slightly blended perspective of a real concert hall, but detail is not lost and the balance is excellent. Lots of momentum in movements 3 and 4! I'd not heard the Wagner piece before. It is well performed by the choir, but my early impression is that it is not very interesting, as Wagner goes. In this set Bruckner is on one disk with Wagner on the other, a convenient arrangement. This Bruckner 7th is fine enough that I expect to enjoy playing it many times." Report Abuse
