Notes and Editorial Reviews

This anticipated new release is the recording premiere of Johann Heinrich Rolle’s St. Matthew Passion. Written in 1748, Rolle’s music is set to Martin Luther’s translation of the Gospel of St. Matthew, specifically from chapter 26 verse 30 to the end of chapter 27. The work also includes individual chorale strophes, and texts with an unknown author. Rolle’s St. Matthew Passion represents the age of sensibility. Rather than focusing on the drama of historical events, the author chooses to fix his center of interest in the believer’s firm faith.
