An Ormandy classic! October 5, 2013 By Paul R. (Cary, NC) See All My Reviews "This Bruckner 7 will be somewhat of a revelation for Brucknerphiles. Unlike so many conductors who over interpret this work with constant tempo fluctuations, and dramatic retards at every cadence, this performance is refreshingly straightforward. Tempos are quicker in general, and the whole symphony is played simply and beautifully, letting the music speak for itself. What is revealed is a much more sunny and uplifting work than is portrayed by other recordings. Recorded in Oct. 1968 in the Academy of Music, a venue not known for acoustics well suited for recording, the sound is excellent on this Japanese reissue. (the booklet notes are in Japanese) The Philadelphia Orchestra plays beautifully throughout, with it's signature string sound and robust but never strident brass. This is the finest Bruckner 7 in my collection, and I have many. Also included is the Brahms Haydn Variations from May 1969 in the same hall. It too is beautifully played and recorded. Highly recommended!" Report Abuse
