TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 5. Marche slave. Capriccio italien • Eugene Ormandy, cond; Philadelphia O • RCA-ArkivMusic 38052 (63:56)

"There are no fewer than five Ormandy/Philadelphia recordings of the Tchaikovsky Fifth, of which this is the fourth. Read more hyper-Romantic music, it was best sometimes to let the music—and the orchestra—speak for itself.

The two shorter works were recorded a day apart in 1972; the Marche slave is a bit deliberate at its opening, but it’s refreshing to hear the tricky rhythms played accurately. The Capriccio is likewise a non-interventionist reading that works perfectly. The sound is excellent."
